Morale, Welfare and Recreation provides Sailors and their families the finest facilities, programs and activities to meet their recreational and social needs, encouraging individual values, aids retention, and provides the physical, mental and social needs of a mobile Navy. The purpose of this position is to serve as a Group Exercise Instructor demonstrating and leading safe and effective group exercise classes, applying the fundamental principles of exercise science, under the supervision of the assigned manager.

This position is located at Fitness & Sports, Morale Welfare and Recreation (MWR), Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads- Northwest Annex, Chesapeake, VA.

The purpose of this position is to serve as a Group Exercise Instructor demonstrating and leading safe and effective group exercise classes, applying the fundamental principles of exercise science, under the supervision of the assigned manager. Responsible for conducting one or more group exercise classes which includes but is not limited to lectures, exercise instruction and various athletic endeavors. Must promote good patron relationships and enhance the image of the respective program. The incumbent reviews the schedule of functions that are to take place during the assigned shift in order to ascertain what special preparations are required. Ensures that necessary space, supplies and equipment are available and that room arrangements are completed prior to start of class. Provides instruction and guidance to all patrons. Exercises supervision over all operation of the class/activity.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Must possess and maintain at all times a Certified Group Exercise Instructor/Trainer Certificate from one of the following organizations; American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM); Cooper Institute; American Council on Exercise (ACE); Aerobic and Fitness Association of America (AFAA); American Aerobic Association International/International Sports Medicine Association (AAAI/ISMA); National Dance Exercise Instructor Training Association (NDEITA); International Dance and Exercise Association (IDEA), Yound Men's Christian Association (YMCA).
  • Must possess and maintain at all times a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Instructor certificate and First Aid Instructor certificate with AED.
  • As a position of trust and ITII position, employment is conditional on the successful completion of an Access National Agency Check (ANACI).
  • Must possess and maintain a current drive's license to drive a government vehicle in the performance of duties may be required.
  • Position is subject to an irregular tour of duty which may include weekends and holidays.
