Part-time position/no benefits This position is assigned to Day Support Services. Working hours are as follows: Evenings & weekends not to exceed 29 hours weekly.

Southeastern Virginia Training Center is seeking an individual to support the facility’s mission by serving as a member of the Personal Support Team.

Responsibilities entail assisting the evening Support Specialists with creating evening activities, writing lesson plans, supervising support staff, assisting in Day Support Services, and ensuring that training is implemented on/off campus.

  • Keeps houses informed of the program schedule and any changes in the schedule.

  • Interacts with individuals using age-appropriate language and provides instruction with appropriate voice tone and volume.

  • Assist with completing paper work for off campus outings such as PFA forms, Community Trip Records, Travel Considerations, and Dining Guides.

  • Communicates concerns, problems, and events to supervisor promptly; follows chain of supervision to resolve problems.

  • Assist with direct implementation of training in the evening program.

  • Assist with overseeing staff and provides frequent, constructive feedback, pertaining to the implementation of activities/events

  • Documents program activities/attendance for reporting purposes.

  • Ensures that active treatment is taking place within the group and that positive interactions are taking place with the staff and individuals that are being supported.

  • Ensures that nutrition and physical management plans are carried out.

  • Assist with developing training based upon strengths, needs, and ISP of assigned Individuals.

  • Provides feedback in the development and implementation of person-centered plans.

  • Assist with evaluating individual performance and makes revisions to activities when needed

  • Observes support staff while engaged in activities to ensure participation and task completion.

  • Ensures that leisure materials are safe operational and that pica concerns are addressed.

  • Follows proper physical intervention and programmatic treatments to ensure safety of individuals and staff.

  • Effectively provides training to direct support staff assigned to assist in evening activities.

  • Initiate and make staff assignments to ensure everyone is participating in the planned activities.

  • Arranges transportation, follows all facility policies and guidelines in driving a state vehicle.

  • Serves as appropriate role model for individuals in on and off-campus settings.

  • Assist with performing supervisory duties and coordinates activities and events.

  • Accesses individual performance for documentation and reporting purposes.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.

  • Experience in a day program and leisure activities.

  • Valid Virginia driver’s license required.

  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively, including the ability to follow written and oral instructions, observe and accurately document observations.

  • Requires the ability to learn basic techniques and knowledge of developmental care & treatment.

  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the job, which includes standing, bending, walking, pushing/pulling, lifting up to ¼ of body weight, providing support during all aspects of daily personal care, and intervening with aggressive behaviors.

  • Working knowledge of leisure activities for persons with intellectual disabilities and the ability to apply those techniques during leisure sessions; ability to verbally communicate effectively to the Personal Support Team members, community establishments and business representatives.

  • Must successfully complete the facility’s Pre-service training program for Direct Support Professional Staff, to include Person Centered Approach techniques, CPR/First Aid Certification, TOVA, medication administration, nutritional management and physical/behavioral management, for continued employment. (Pre service training class is 3 weeks long, with shifts from 8:00 am to 4:30pm and 12:30pm to 9:00pm).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with people who have intellectual disabilities, mental health issues, or medical conditions is preferred.
